Gift of Millie Phuah in memory of Ho Chee Teng

This Model 20 Brunsviga calculator belonged to Ho Chee Teng, a migrant to Singapore in the early – mid 1900s. He was born in Panyu, Guangdong in the 1910s and arrived in Singapore with two of his brothers. Ho worked as an accountant in the early 1960s, serving wealthy private clients. He may have used this Brunsviga calculator to check the calculations done on his abacus, or may have used the abacus to check the calculator's results given a wariness of new technology. The calculator is a pinwheel calculator which was operated manually by turning the wheels to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These calculators were available in Singapore, and popular because they were easy to use, affordable and reliable.
