This pair of low-heeled shoes is decorated with bead embroidery of a geometric tile-like design and secured using a strap. Accompanying the shoes are crescent-shaped cushions to support the shape of the toeboxes. Beaded slippers were popular in the early 20th century. The slipper faces were sewn with beads on a frame and then sent to shoemakers to be attached to the leather slipper base. It was a time when Western-style clothing and materials like Europe-imported glass beads were incorporated into dress in Southeast Asia as an expression of their “modernity”.
