This pair of heeled closed-toe slippers for the bride has an embroidered shoe face, utilizing voided satin stitch to create motifs of birds and flowers. It is possibly part of a pair of wedding slippers, the other with no heels for the groom. Accompanying the slippers is one of a pair of shoe cushion, to support the shape of the slipper. Embroidered slippers were popular amongst the Peranakan community in Singapore since the 19th century, but eventually fell out of fashion and were replaced by beaded slippers. These slippers belonged to Wee Bee Neo, a prominent Sang Khek Umm or mistress of wedding ceremonies. As a wedding specialist, she was in charge of the bride’s hair and jewellery, and guiding the young lady through the proper rituals.
