Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. Prior to that, he served as Lieutenant-Governor of Java from 1811 to 1816. This original diploma was issued to Raffles by the Royal Jennerian Society on 30 March 1825 in recognition of his support for smallpox vaccination in Java. The Society was founded in 1803 by the physician Edward Jenner to promote vaccination against smallpox.
