SGCool Label Text: While establishing the British trading settlement on Singapore in 1819, Raffles was concurrently Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen in Sumatra. This series of addresses were given upon Raffles’ departure from Bencoolen for England in 1824. This includes the official address by the local inhabitants of Bencoolen before Raffles left Bencoolen, a second address following the destruction of Raffles’ ship the Fame and upon his return to Bencoolen, and lastly Raffles’ reply. These addresses were privately printed by Raffles upon his arrival in London.
