Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. This book’s entry on Raffles is the first known printed biographical account of him and caused him much distress with its implication that his promotion to Assistant-Secretary in the Prince of Wales (Penang) government was due to his marriage to a woman connected with the Secretary of the East India Company.
