Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. This letter was written by Charles Assey, Raffles’ private secretary in Java when Raffles was Lieutenant-Governor. In this letter, Assey quotes from Raffles in a letter that is no longer extant, regarding the founding of Singapore which had occurred earlier that same year.
