This tile panel illustrates the famous fruit-cutting scene originally described in the Quran (Sura Yusuf, verse 31) about the life of the prophet Yusuf. The Quranic tale about the trials and tribulations of Yusuf and his incomparable beauty became popularised as an epic Sufi romance, Yusuf o Zulaykha, through the adaptation by the great Persian poet, Jami, in the 15th century. The pictorial composition of this panel probably drew from this literary tradition. Such figural compositions were popular decorative elements for garden pavilions of the period.
