Fragmentary Timurid mosaic tile panel

This fragment of a tile mosaic features stylised cloud scroll motifs in yellow against a black background. This reflects the influence of Chinese motifs on Islamic art. The links between China and the Islamic world are old and important, probably dating back to as early as the 8th century. Chinese trade wares were considered luxury goods, and were greatly in demand in both Asian and European markets. The trade in Chinese goods, particularly ceramics and textiles had a great impact on the material culture of the Islamic lands, inspiring its artists.Piecing together of tile mosaics such as this was a time-consuming activity. They were made by cutting slabs of glazed tiles after firing into the required shapes and then placed downwards where plaster was poured at the back. After the plaster was dry, the piece was then lifted and secured against the wall.
