“Code File: Three Domes” by Urich Lau presents a trio of domes that feature prominently in the architectures of three major cultural institutions in Singapore – the National Museum of Singapore, the Singapore Art Museum, and the National Gallery Singapore – yet ambivalence abounds with their error-strewn appearances: the domes appear fragmented, colours are selectively inverted or dulled, while chunky bands of magenta and yellow break up the natural blue of the sky. Reflecting on the nature and inherited histories of the arts ecosystem in Singapore, the artist has tampered with the digital code files of the photographs, mischievously inserting statements from the National Arts Council’s mission, vision, and core values into the source material to render the final images in unexpected ways. While these aspirational words represent the hopes and ambitions for the local arts scene, their interference within the code files generates an inadvertent, altering effect, ruining the integrity of the original photographs. In this work, Urich draws heavily upon the aesthetics of disruption to question structures of power, conveying his sentiments as an artist practicing within the current cultural and political climate of Singapore.
