This is a photograph of Dr Douglas Drummond McIlvean, taken by a Japanese photographer in Penang. McIlvean was attached to the 2nd Gordon Highlanders during the battle of Singapore and was released after the Japanese found out that he was a civilian. He was later arrested and almost executed by the Japanese for stealing, only to find out that the officer in charge was his photographer, who spared his life.
