This long-sleeved shirt was signed by members of the No. 10 Platoon, B Company, 2/30th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force in Wallgrove Army Base, which was a staging and training area during WWII. There are 31 signatures identified on the shirt, including Pte. Allan Claude Smith, to whom the shirt ostensibly belonged. Smith was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore and although the exact history of his imprisonment is not known, he was found to be held in Changi at the end of the war. The 2/30th Battalion was formed on 22nd November 1940. On 14 January 1942, they were engaged in the first AIF attack against the Japanese. They subsequently fought in both Malaya and Singapore and were taken prisoner when the latter fell.
