This book records the orders of the Singapore Tailor's customers in the late 1950s. Singapore Tailor was the first company that the founder, Mr Choo Foo Wah, set up in 1955, after working as an apprentice to a local tailor specialising in made-to-measure Western suits. The business continued under this name until the 1960s, when Mr Choo failed to register a trademark and had to change the company's name to Fatman Singapore Gents’ Wear Company. In the 1960s, with Western culture making greater inroads into the local fashion consciousness, there was an increasing popularity for made-to-measure clothing which led to a demand for tailors who could replicate coveted Western designs. Between the 1970s and the 1980s, Fatman was one of the most renowned tailor shops in Singapore, ordering fabrics from London to satiate the growing demands of consumers, who also appreciated Fatman's fine workmanship.Fatman's branding of a fat gentleman in a Western suit was both unique and familiar to many, and assured customers that the tailors at Fatman understood the male body, and were capable of tailoring clothes to fit all body types.
