This group of four gelatin silver prints shows scenes of a Peranakan wedding, including the arrival of the groom at his bride’s home on the first day where he was accompanied by a page boy and pak chindek. The most lavish Peranakan weddings lasted 12 days, although that was considered too elaborate by this time. From the late 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century, the Peranakan Chinese in the Straits Settlements continued to observe wedding practices which closely followed traditional Chinese conventions.Photography was a transformational technology when it was first invented around 1839 and was quickly embraced by the Peranakans as soon as it arrived in Southeast Asia around 1841. This group of photographs reveals the longstanding relationship between Peranakans and photography which continues till today.
