Big Mac clam shell food container

This is a polystyrene container created for holding McDonald's Big Mac in 1975. The words Big Mac are printed all over the box along with the name McDonald with their recognizable double arches logo. It was designed by a failed businessman, Jon Huntsman Sr,who first pitched it to Burger King but later worked with MacDonald. The clamshell form was designed to comfortably hold one Big Mac - sliced buns holding two regular beef patties. Compact in size, light to hold and the use of an industrial material such as styrofoam - this container epitomizes the 1970s and 1980s fast food culture, which mostly rested on using easily disposable containers. Giving into public pressure, the company stopped using such environmentally harmful containers and switched to paper in the 1990s. This international hamburger chain was first opened in in 1940 by Richard and Maurice MacDonald in California and has gained world-wide foothold including Singapore- where it continues to attract numerous customers and has become a vibrant social space especially for the young.
