Beaded handbag (incomplete)

This is an incomplete beaded handbag with petit-point bead embroidery on needlepoint canvas. On the green background are two two oval-shaped panels featuring figures wearing Dutch-style dress. The panel below features a boy and a girl holding hands near the river. A yellow building and a black windmill could be seen in the background. The panel above shows a girl with a dog.In the early 20th century, Western-style clothing and materials like Europe-imported glass beads were incorporated into Peranakan fashion as an expression of their “modernity”.
