View in the Island of Cracatoa by John Webber

This print of Krakatoa by John Webber is one of the rare views of the volcanic island before the massive eruption of 1883 which obliterated most of the island. It was based on a drawing by Webber who was the official artist of Captain James Cook's third and final voyage to the Pacific. After Cook's death in 1779, the expedition returned to England via the East India trade route, passing through the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, where Krakatoa was located.
