This photograph shows a colonial bungalow with family and servants posing on the veranda. The European men are dressed in white cotton drill jackets known as ‘jas tutup’ (“closed coat”) and matching trousers, or white shirts paired with batik trousers. With continuous improvement of camera technology, it became possible to take photographs outside a studio in the first decades of the 20th century. Many middle-class families collected photographs in albums as a way of documenting family life, or documentasi keluarga.
