This formica top divider shelf is typical of the 1960s and was probably used to store items in the liviing room. It was used to separate the living room from the dining area. Formica was commonly used in furniture in the 1960s to 1970s because of its low cost and cheerful appearance, while teak was a all time favourite in the tropics for furniture making.
