Epitaph IV is one the earliest calligraphic paintings produced by Pirous. Upon his return from his studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York in 1971, he embarked on three series of works, often known as the Epitaph series, Tulisan Putih (Writings in White) series and Tulisan Merah (Writings in Red) - shown between 1971 and 1974. The work being proposed is from the former series.
