Reading, Comprehension and Language Practice Textbook, Book 1

Published in 1962 in Singapore by Phoenix Publications, this textbook from a series of four books, would have been used by local students of the Primary 3 level to master the English language. Following the establishment of the Ministry of Education in 1955, the Singapore government's education policy was emphasised in the first Five Year Plan (1961–1965), which demonstrated the importance placed on English, as it was useful for communicating in areas such as trade, commerce and industry. Despite this, English was not the sole medium of instruction, as parents were given the freedom to choose between English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil for their children, according to the Annual Report of 1959. In the latter part of 1959, two or more language streams were integrated into a school building under one principal, to foster social cohesion and promote greater understanding between students of different language streams. In 1963, the Commission of Inquiry into Education of Singapore endorsed the use of Malayan-centred textbooks and syllabuses, exemplified in the cover of this English textbook.
