Strung around the waist by female dancers from the Serui-Laut culture on Yapen Island , these aprons feature bright green beading with a colourful assortment of sun symbols. The motifs may have been inspired by patterns used in body painting and carving which was widespread in tribes around New Guinea. The design is completed with a fringe of mixed fabric arranged around the triangular edge.
