The centrefield of this cloth is decorated with a motif of interlocking squares derived from Indian patola trade cloths. The end panels bear rows of highly stylized shrimp or lobster motifs, and skull trees (andung), along with small fish, flowers and other minor details. In Sumba large double width cloths such as this are known as hinggi. They were worn by men wrapped around the waist, although they can also be worn draped or tied over the shoulders.
