Encyclopaedic account of Batavia

Batavia was the site of a VOC post from 1610, and founded in 1619 by J.P. Coen, as regional headquarters for the Dutch East Indies Company. This book with illustrations, maps and plans provides an extensive account of Batavia (present Jakarta). It was first published in Amsterdam by Petrus Conradi & Harlingen, Volkert van der Plaats, 1782-83This book is a testament to the print culture that thrived in 18th century Holland where a number of map makers, designers and engravers worked for the VOC – thus illustrating the interconnected network of colonial expansions and creation of knowledge.
