This settee belonged to Paul Victor Emanuel Warnars (1876-1940) and his wife Maria Warnars-Krol (1885-1930). Warnars was involved in the tin mining industry, living an working in Muntok, which was at that time the capital of the Dutch Indies Bangka-Belitung Residency. The settee is made of Amboyna wood, and was of a style popular across Dutch and British colonies in the 19th century. It bears the influence of the early 19th century "Grecian" sofas designed by Thomas Sheraton.
