Named the ‘Castilla lace jacket’, this jacket was also produced in white by Diane von Furstenberg, a New York-based fashion label. It could have been inspired by the nyonya kebaya, a fitted top favoured by young Peranakan Chinese women. Repeated lace designs at the sleeves and tapered ends at the front are shapes and technique often seen in the nyonya kebaya. The lace kebaya is a garment popular with women in the Malay world from the late 19th century. This jacket was part of DvF’s 2016 Spring/Summer collection which included other Southeast Asian touches such as Pekalongan-batik-style printed floral designs. Diane von Furstenberg opened Singapore Fashion Week in May 2015, and is known for inventing the iconic wrap dress in 1974, her philanthropic works that empower women, and serving as chairwoman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) from 2006-2019.
