This brown and pale pink sarong is decorated with large sprays of flowers in grouped together in a bouquet, with birds and butterflies darting around them. This motif reoccurs throughout the textile and is known as the buketan motif. It was a design popularized by the maker of this sarong, the Dutch-Eurasian batik maker, Eliza Van Zuylen. Flowers also border the top and bottom edge of the sarong. Batik sarongs were worn by Peranakan Chinese in the Strait Settlements and Indonesia as a skirt to accompany a top known as a kebaya.
