This is a yellow silk baju peki (known as baju koon in the Straits Settlements). It refers to a Chinese style blouse worn by Peranakan Chinese women in the region with a long skirt. Additional hybrid elements in the form of lace trims and edges were added to the traditionally silk textile. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
