Portable shrine

Shrines like this were used to transport a sculpture of a deity in processions between temples during important festivals. The two slots in the base allow poles to be inserted for ease of carrying. The deity would be placed in the central space on the middle tier.Designed to resemble a religious building, this 2-metre-high shrine was said to be made by the Xu San You workshop in Guangzhou for a shrine in Malacca. It was reportedly found in a Chinese restaurant in the Netherlands.
