From 1912 to 1921, the American missionary Ruth E. Atkins (born 1885), who owned this photograph, was the principal of the Methodist Girls’ School in Malacca. The school was established in 1904 by Mrs Emma Shellabear (born 1861), wife of the Malay scholar and British missionary William G. Shellabear (1862–1947). The school was originally housed inthe residence of Baba Tan Keong Keng, 142 Heeren Street, but moved to Kubu Road in 1910. In this photograph Rev. Shellabear towers over the group in the back row.
