In charge of training art teachers, Richard Walker has been credited with the formation of art education in Singapore, as well as being a founding member of the Singapore Art Society. He taught many prominent teachers, artists and bureaucrats, introduced art classes for Malay teachers, and promoted watercolour painting. All nine works proposed for donation were featured in Richard Walker’s tribute exhibition, held from 7-9 July 1972 at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Hill Street. Organised by the Singapore Art Society, this exhibition featured works owned by a number of Walker’s students and friends, including the donor, who was an art teacher who studied with Walker.
