These prints record the appearance and customs of ethnic groups of Java. They are from a group of 56 lithographs called Dutch East Indies Types (Nederlandsch Oost-Indische typen), made from drawings by the Dutch artist Auguste van Pers (1815–1871).Van Pers spent much of his career in Southeast Asia, and began issuing the prints in 1851. C.W. Meiling, one of the foremost Dutch lithographers, took over publication in 1853.
