This boundary marker is believed to have been used by Cheang Hong Lim (1825–1893) and his son to demarcate the limits of the land they owned, which was a large area near to present day Pasir Panjang. It has been inscribed with the words ‘苑生’ (Wan Seng) which is another name Cheang Hong Lim used as well as the name of his company. Cheang Hong Lim was a leading merchant and philanthropist in Singapore. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1876 as well as being the first known recipient in Singapore of a Qing imperial title in 1869 for his generous contributions to defence funds in Fukien province.
