This heavily-embellished cap would probably have belonged to a Muslim nobleman or member of a royal family. The cord at the top could have held a tassel. Zardozi and sequins cover the velvet surface of the cap – zardozi (embroidery using gold or silver “thread”) was an important craft produced for upper-class consumption during and after the Mughal rule, seeing decline by the 20th century.
