This photograph shows a group of people outside the “Cave of the white crane (白鹤洞)”. The back of the photograph is inscribed with: “23.1.2477 [oval stamp: TJWA TJIN HONG/S.C.B./ GANDJARAN] 7.3.1926”. From the Straits Times, 18 August 1924: “A representative of this paper was yesterday introduced to the Chinese hermit and “holy man,” Tan Tik Sioe, in a newly-built attap house… The hermit hails from the mountains of Java and is on his way to China. During his short stay in Singapore he is said to have effected wonderful cures of old-standing sickness among Chinese, free of charge.”
