A mottled green and brown jade ceremonial axe

This slender trapezoidal chisel has one straight edge opposite a beveled and slightly curved cutting edge on one side. The reverse flat has three holes drilled from one side near the edge. The stone is now opaque and has mottled blackish olive-green colour. It is highly polished resulting in a satiny surface. Some earth accretions can be found on the chisel. This ceremonial chisel could be based on utilitarian stone chisels of the period. The preciousness of the material, the highly polished surface, and the tendency of jade to fracture and chip suggests that this object functioned as a ritual object rather than as an everyday stone tool. It signified the social status of the owner as they held it for ceremonies.
