The basic exterior form of this piece of furniture is derived from late 17th-century English writing cabinets, although it was made in gilded lacquer in China. The middle section is a drop-front desk with drawers and pigeonholes. However, the upper doors open to reveal an elaborate Christian altar with a carved ivory crucifix.
