This group of garments were made for a Pwo Chin man. The tunic and trousers were probably tailoured from commercially produced cotton, whilst the bag and headcloth were woven from home-spun cotton and silk respectively. The bag was made of indigo-dyed cotton with supplementary weaving in red wool and embellished with metallic bosses and tassels. The headcloth was probably made with home-spun and dyed silk. Many different sub-groups of the Chin community live across the hilly Chin state in the north-west region of Myanmar as well as across the border into Chittagong and other areas of north-east India. Their textile arts are a marker of their identity as a sub-group within the wider Chin community. Elaborate textiles also signal the owner's wealth and social standing within the village hierarchy.
