The Shadow-Line is a short novel written by Joseph Conrad in 191 and first published in 1916. Its plot revolves around a young man taking up captaincy on a ship. Joseph Conrad was a seaman and author who visited Singapore and the Raffles Hotel in 1887. He described the hotel in the novel ‘End of Tether’ as being ‘airy as a birdcage’.
