This large tray is decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay in the form of delicate scrolling floral and vine designs. Birds and butterflies fly among the foliage. At the centre a cloud collar pattern frames a hanging ornament. Details such as the veins of the leaves and the feathers of the birds are highlighted with blackened engraving.Large oval trays like this were often made in China and Vietnam for export to Europe, while rectangular or lobed trays were favoured domestically. This example was probably made for export or for a western patron in the 19th century and would have been used to serve tea and other refreshments.
