This is a brochure for 'Niederlandisch Indien', also known as the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. The image depicts a steamship in the background making its way towards the foreground, where two people stand and sit. They are dressed in batik cloth, and the woman, who wears only a batik skirt, carries a water container and has a flower in her hair. Above them is a tree which unrealistically has both coconuts and bananas hanging from it, representing the different tropical fruit that grow in Indonesia. Behind the ship a smoking volcano, a common motif in promotional material which advocated Indonesia as a land of volcanoes, idyllic landscapes and virginal forests. Notably, the colonial presence is minimised in this brochure, whilst it is the 'indigenous' aspects, which would appeal to the tourist, which are highlighted.
