The Tang Shipwreck was acquired through the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat.

The Changsha potters pioneered the use of calligraphic inscriptions as the main design element for their ceramic wares. Here, the decoration also doubles up as a form of advertisement for the potters who made this bowl. The inscription "湖南道草市石渚盂子有明樊家记" indicates that this bowl was a product of the Fan family located in Shizu, Hunan. Although examples embellished with self-advertising phrases are known among extant Changsha wares, this bowl is unique among the Tang shipwreck cargo.
