The Tang Shipwreck was acquired through the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat.
The pattern on this bowl is fairly typical among this cargo but the red colouring is seen only on a few pieces. The Changsha kilns were probably the first in China to achieve success with underglaze copper-red painting. Most of the designs were produced in oxidised firings (rich in oxygen), but copper-red patterns were caused by reducing the oxygen supply, which turned turned otherwise copper-green pigments red.
