We Never Fell

We Never Fell pays homage to the strength and resilience displayed by the Vietnamese during the massive social reconstruction exercise that took place after the nearly 20 year-long Vietnam War ended in 1975. Although many continued to suffer from poverty and hunger during this post-war period, and some tensions remained between the once divided parts of North and South Vietnam, the people were united in their fierce optimism that Vietnam would be rebuilt. The sculptures invite the viewer to push them, yet they always bounce back, either playfully or painfully, depending on the degree of force applied, and more significantly, they always remain standing. Nguyen Tran Nam is one of Vietnam's emerging contemporary artists. He is known for interrogating the modes of behaviour and interaction between the two, and seeks to make visible both past and present-day social, political and historical issues of Vietnam through his practice. He has exhibited in solo and group shows in the USA, Australia, Vietnam and Europe.
