The 19 drawings contained in this sketchbook, many of which are accompanied by inscriptions in a mix of Bahasa Indonesia and Dutch, proffer an intimate look at Sudjojono’s life at home, in the studio, and around the neighbourhood. Images of his wife, Rose, and his children resting, singing, playing cards – captured in moments of unassuming domesticity – attest to Sudjojono’s devotion to and love for his family. Besides being a record of the realities of the artist’s life at that point in time, these drawings also form a notable counterpoint to Sudjojono’s large oil paintings. Portraits and landscapes alike are fleshed out in great detail, accompanied by inscriptions that offer insight into the artist’s personality.
