This small sketchbook was assembled by a Prisoner of War in Singapore during World War II. Made using leaves of repurposed newspaper, the sketchbook consists of 16 original pencil sketches which are captioned and dated from 1944 to 1945. The illustrations of the sketchbook shed light on the POW experience, with the front cover featuring a self-portrait of a chained blank-faced soldier. Another sketch depicts a “Hymn to the Southern Cross”, which may indicate the artist was an Australian or New Zealander.
