This rock crystal snuff bottle is painted on the inside with a butterfly fluttering above plants, the reverse with a calligraphic inscription by Ma Shaoxuan, signed and dated first summer month, 1896. Ma Shaoxuan (1867–1939) was regarded as one of the most technically accomplished artists in the medium of interior painting on snuff bottles. He was best known for his painting of portraits.
