This is a superlative example of a Baluchari sari. Named after the village of Baluchar in Murshidabad District of West Bengal, India, Baulchari saris were traditionally woven for the women of the zamindar (landlord) families. Baluchari saris often incorporated in terms of motifs, scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata along with floral themes. Here the pallu of the sari is decorated with large paisleys set within a border of human figures; the sari executed in shades of ochre, maroon with silvery-white thread woven to highlight the border.
