Frame size: 3.5 x 30.5 x 25 cm
This portrait in an oval frame features a Chinese gentleman in Manchu dress who appears to have his hair pulled back in a queue. Oval vignettes with a plain background became fashionable from the late 19th century. This photo is part of a large group of framed photographs which provides important visual documentation of Peranakan fashion and lifestyles in the Straits Settlements and Indonesia in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries. Studio photography reached Singapore and the region around the mid 1800s, and Peranakans were among the earliest clients.
