In 1943, James Puthucheary enlisted in the Indian National Army in response to a call for volunteers to fight for Indian independence. Puthucheary was posted to a guerrilla regiment and fought in the Burmese jungle and survived the disastrous Battle of Imphal. When James Puthucheary decided to join the INA, it was endorsed by his immediate circle. His brothers, Dominic (pictured here) and George Puthucheary also joined the Balak Sena. The former recalls marching at Batu Pahat with a wooden gun during daily training sessions.
